Is Head & Shoulders safe for coloured hair?

Head & Shoulders DERMA&PURE shampoos and conditioners are safe for coloured hair - in fact, some even help protect your colour from fading.

So, you’ve coloured your hair and are in love with your new rich shade. Not to mention, you spent hours picking the perfect hue and looking at those strange little hair loops they show sample colours on at the salon.

You’re not about to waste all that hard work (and money spent) by letting it fade away ten seconds after you posted that triumphant hair shot on Instagram!

Taking care of coloured hair is easy when you know how. A pH balanced, dermatologically tested shampoo and matching conditioner that are proven to help prevent fade are a great place to start.

To take care of your coloured hair, first you need to know why it fades.

WHY DOES COLOUR FADE?

The simple answer is: because of water! When you wash your hair, the colour molecules seep out of the fibres, resulting in colour fade.

Hair has an outer layer called the “F-layer” which is responsible for “waterproofing” your hair. It acts like a seal for dye molecules and also plays a role in preventing damage.

Keeping this “F-layer” intact is super important if you want your hair colour to look glossy and gorgeous long after your salon trip.

Now, we’ll be honest: dyeing your hair has probably damaged the “F-layer” a bit. Your job now is to protect it from further damage so the dye molecules stay in your hair.

To do this, you need to keep your hair in excellent condition.

Here are the three things you need to know:

  • Colour treated hair needs more protection than “virgin” hair -  Hair dyes use strong chemicals to “open” your hair fibre and deposit pigment.  These can strip away hair’s natural protective “waterproofing,” and lift up the cuticle edges so hair feels damaged and rough.

  • Well moisturized hair resists fade - Deeply moisturising products help seal the outer layer of your hair – smoothing the cuticle and helping protect the colour within.

  • Hair quality is key – to keep your hair looking great, start by caring for your scalp.  Improving your scalp condition with Head & Shoulders actually improves the quality of hair as it grows, so your strands can be at their best. As dandruff and other scalp issues can cause hair to grow poorly, make sure these are taken care of as a matter of priority.

When trying to avoid damage to your “f-layer,” consistency is key. You need to make sure the routine you use every single time you wash your hair is targeted to keeping it strong.

That’s where our Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky shampoo and conditioner comes in. Using this pair of products will give you all the moisturisers you’ll need to keep those dyed locks hydrated and help prevent colour fade.* Plus, they’re gentle enough to use every time you wash.

What’s more, like all the shampoos and conditioners in the range, Smooth & Silky products contain an active ingredient, which reduces and treats many of the early signs of dandruff:

  • scalp dryness

  • skin irritation

  • itchiness

Using the shampoo and conditioner together consistently helps to tackle these signs and ensure that you have a good foundation to grow strong and resilient hair.

Now, you’ve got all the tricks up your sleeve that you’ll need to keep that post-salon look for as long as possible. So, whether you’ve gone bright red, rose gold or even green - and we hope you did that intentionally - your new shade is sure to dazzle in many Instagram posts to come.
