Does Head & Shoulders strip colour from your hair?

You may have heard some of this questions before: does Head & Shoulders fade hair dye? Can Head & Shoulders remove hair dye? Simply put: no! One of the most common myths online is that Head & Shoulders strips colour from your hair more than typical beauty shampoos.

All of these claims have something in common – they’re not based on science. Allow us to strip away the façade.

Does Head & Shoulders strip hair colour? Examining the myths

The idea that Head & Shoulders fades colour more comes from a misunderstanding about how our shampoos work. People believe that dandruff shampoos must be harsh on hair because they need to include dandruff-fighting ingredients that ‘strip away’ dandruff.

However, our products are formulated to protect your hair and keep it in good condition, which will help preserve your colour.

You might be surprised to learn that Head & Shoulders shampoos aren’t harsh at all. They use many of the same cleansing and moisturising ingredients found in typical non anti-dandruff or beauty shampoos.

What makes Head & Shoulders special is the addition of dandruff-fighting active ingredients such as Piroctone Olamine that protect your scalp in-between washes from dandruff-causing irritants. These active ingredients do not strip hair colour.

Does Head & Shoulders remove hair dye?

It doesn’t! This potent formula may be tough on dandruff but it does not remove hair colour. You may notice that your hair dye fades over time, which is completely natural when you stop dying your it. Hair colouring needs continuous care and refreshing.

Our main active ingredients are Piroctone Olamine and Selenium Sulphide. They help you fight dandruff, itchy and dry scalp, and give you smooth, soft and healthy looking hair. They also moisturise it, leaving it soft and manageable. These active ingredients don’t cause your hair dye to fade!

Why does some dandruff shampoo ruin hair colour?

Some anti-dandruff products will indeed damage your hair colour. Shampoos that contain zinc pyrithione (ZPT) may fade your hair colour over time – so remember to always read what’s in the label or better yet – choose Head & Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoos. Our shampoos don’t contain zinc pyrithione, so your hair colour is safe with us!

Which Head and Shoulders is safe for colour-treated hair?

If you’re looking for Head & Shoulders products specially dedicated to coloured hair then you should definitely try the Supreme Colour protect line-up. Both Colour Protect Shampoo & Conditioner are safe tu use on colour-treated hair and their additional benefit is that they protect your hair dye from fading with regular use.

What exactly strips hair colour?

The answer is very simple. Your colour will fade over time because of water. Washing your hair will have its natural toll on your hair. However, if you use our Supreme Colour Protect Shampoo together with the Colour Protect conditioner you will help your hair colour and make it last for longer. And get rid of dandruff, too!
